RAF Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with France's air force in a joint strike targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory operated by the Daesh militant organization, according to the UK's MoD.

The facility, pinpointed through surveillance, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was situated in mountainous terrain just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a several access tunnels leading to the facility... preliminary assessments suggest the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the attack conducted Saturday night and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - referred to as Daesh - enforced jihadist rule over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action demonstrates British leadership, and commitment to work closely with allied nations, to eradicate any re-emergence of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," Britain's Defence Chief the minister said.

RAF aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "deter any efforts to regroup" of IS following its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of British forces who took part in this strike for their expertise and their valour," he commented. "They were part of numerous British troops on duty over Christmas and New Year. This action, to eliminate terrorist threats who threaten our way of life, highlights how UK forces are ready to step up, throughout the year, protecting the UK at home and influential overseas."

In December, the US military executed what it called a "massive strike" against IS targets in the country, subsequent to an assault killed two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The U.N. says IS still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Iraq and Syria.
