Tetris Wouldn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type Might Solve This

Each time a significant honors show nears, one notices an outcry to include additional classifications to honor underappreciated efforts and delight the spirits of fans with niche passions.

My colleague has already made for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, this being a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist for pushing forward just as with other blinkered fanatics, I possess a compelling case backing this proposal is the most urgent and important of all. The demand is this: We need a category for puzzle games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Classifying creative works isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and it will always start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason movie academies steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise for the industry of gaming, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.

Existing Game Classification System

The major gaming awards currently feature award types recognizing Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these six categories effectively encompass many game types, making space possible for most games within them.

This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: structural challenges in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. What category would fit them among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.

The Representation Problem

There are dozens excellent brain-teasers published annually lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match for categories like Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging independent game categories.

  • An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated completely that year
  • Another creative title missed out that year
  • A beloved organization game got ignored in 2021
  • Limited numbers of puzzle games scraped into niche award types

Significance of Puzzle Games

These are often modest productions, but the art in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as most engaged experiences worldwide and have been for an extended period.

The iconic tile-matching title challenges popular creative games for the title of most purchased experience; it additionally competes for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, while interacting with almost every other genre.

Proposal and Rationale

Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. You could fill a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.

Restating the point, these are games without proper classification in important events. Logic title developers operate at the hard edge of video game design, developing some of essential manifestations of gaming itself. Just like film action specialists, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay decades.
